Hydraulic cooler blew out

MY MD70 hydraulic cooler had a leak in it. Took it out to my local rad/cooler shop and I guess its all blown out. The cooler was ballooned out. They told me that its not a pressure rated cooler and cant handle much pressure, its similar to an automotive rad. Is this true for alot of these machines? They figured since its cold here -25C the oil probably got thick and couldnt get out fast enough. I dont really want to buy an OEM replacement if this is going to happen again here. Are there any other options for different coolers? I can get an OEM one for $1600 from my semi-local terex dealer.

Wow, something was not rite there, i'd change the hydraulic oil filter just in case it had ice in it causing a restriction.
1600 for a cooler seems a bit much to me too.......

The filters were just replaced. Looking at the parts diagram the filter appears to be on the inlet to the cooler. I did have a small mystery leak since I bought the machine. I did clean the loader up recently and the cooler was pretty fouled up on the outside. I wonder if I just uncovered a leak that has been there and allowed it to open up. The repair shop said its toast. The oil wasnt spraying out just pouring a 1" wide trickle down from between the cores. Trackloaderparts.com wants 1800usd for the same cooler. Im probably going to have to look for an aftermarket replacement or bite the bullet and order one from my dealer and wait a month for it.

I dont really buy the part about the oil being to thick to flow in the cold. I did have to add a fresh 5 gal bucket that was stored outside in the snow and it poured fine into the reservoir. Needed oil to get onto the trailer.

When you uncovered the leak is it possible you filled it with water and it froze up?

its possible i guess. It should take a fair amount or direct spray to fill it up. I had the machine running about an hour later. Before the bottom third of the cooler was a solid mass of gunk. Im going to grab the cooler from the shop Monday and see what the hole looks like. Definitely don't want to spend $1600 on a new cooler.

That would be awesome. Ill grab the measurements tomorrow when I get the cooler back. I may try to patch the cooler tomorrow also. Depending on where the leak is located. Just to get by until I can get a replacement one.

My cooler is 25.5" tall 10" wide 4" thick. The leaks on my cooler appear to be on the upper tank seam. I am currently soldering these up. Got it from not holding any pressure to only a few small pin holes. There were probably 5-8 leaks along the tank.

Call 1-888-226-8522 they might be able to help ......what kind of pressure does it have to have?

You'd be surprised what you can repair with a little time. I repaired an S250 cooler that had a rust patch, took a while and a few sticks of silver solder, but it got it all sealed up.

Got some soldering done. Went from not able to hold any air pressure to holding 12 psi for a few hrs. All the leaks were on the bottom of the cooler. Reflowed one old repair and soldered up one entire side of the lower tank. Maybe tomorrow I can get this reinstalled and try it out.

Im not totally sure on the entire underlying problem. It looks like there was some repairs in the past. The lower tank is swelled but its looking like that was a while ago. It leaked right after i washed all the gung off it. The filter is before the cooler. After the cooler it dumps to the tank and that line looks fine. It def was coming out with no to little pressure. Just dribbled out. the previous owner did some strange things and he mentioned he bought it from a fertilizer plant in the states somewhere and the chemicals did eat away some of the bearings in the undercarriage that he replaced. Im suspecting its a previous bad repair and corrosion issue in the past. I found so much strange fixes on this very cheap buy. Does anyone know what kind of bulb is in the glow plug indicator?? Mines jumpered out and gutted....

Well it held for a little while. I have fixed a few weepers the last couple weeks but they keep showing up. Looks like the heads on the tank are shot and very thin. Its def not a pressure restriction issue and the leaks just drip. I am thinking its the vibration causing the cracks to form. I have a local company going to build me a replacement one for about half of a new one from the dealer.

Still seems strange as you said it looked like it had puffed up from pressure. I'd like to know what pressure is in the cooler

me too. Im putting a pressure guage on the new cooler on the outlet where the temp sender is supposed to be. By looking at it the expansion of the tank was from before me. Tank is so thin that I dented the upper tank just loosening the fitting. I have the newly built tank at home but am waiting for a day that isnt -20c to install it.

Got the newly built tank installed and working. I have a pressure gauge where the temp sending unit was. This is on the outlet so not as ideal as I would like. It shows 40psi when cold (-10C) and then once the oil warms up then it drops to about 15psi. This seems alittle high to me for the return side of the cooler. I removed the oil reservoir cap to see if it was maybe a vent issue but no difference. Im not sure if this is really too high... I did notice the reservoir cap looks like a pressure cap and has 20 psi written on it. So its possible the tank is supposed to be under pressure slightly. I have been using the loader for about an hour and it all seems to work fine.
