I am interested in installing an after market cab heater in my Case 1840 diesel skid steer "uni-loader". I have the service manual but it does not give any info on the correct connection to the cooling system. The upper hose appears to be the radiator return line. There appears to be 2 threaded ports in the block adjacent to the thermostat housing. I believe that is the location to tap into the cooling system for the hot side of the engine coolant. 1 of the threaded ports could be used to connect a heater hose to supply a cab heater radiator. The lower hose on the engine appears to be the feed side of the engine cooling system. There also appears to be 2 threaded taps in the housing. 1 of these ports could be used to return coolant from a cab heater radiator to the engine. Can anyone give me SPECIFIC advice on such an install concerning a CASE 1840 diesel skidder?

The square plug in the below picture is were I plan to tap into the hot coolant from the engine. I believe that this location is before the thermostat. This should allow hot coolant to be pumped through the proposed cab heater radiator. I think the plug with the wire is the coolant temp sensor. Can anyone add any specific info to my plan? Thanks.

Your plan sounds sound, I don't know specifics about your engine so i can't say if you looking at the rite plugs to tap into. On Kubota engines, they tap into the by-pass hose. One end is just before the thermostat like the plug you found, theother side was to the water pump.

On the machine that we service with cummins engines. There is a port on the pipe that connects to the lower rad. Hose. That would be return. And the port that shows in the pic with the temp sender is the pressure to the heater core. Also, we have a reducer in the line from the pressure to the heater core. This helps with pressure spikes and not bursting the core. But if you have a good radiator cap(that functions at the correct pressure) you should be fine.

The object to the right of the oil filter is the engine coolant return manifold into which the engine supply is feed coolant from the radiator. The 2 yellow bolts fasten the manifold to the engine block. The square head plug between the 2 yellow bolts is the point I intend to connect the cab heater radiator coolant return hose. There is also a square head plug on the underside of the coolant return manifold (barely visible). I figure that is for draining the system if needed. Any comments are appreciated.

I just installed a heater in my 1840 I will take some pics tomorrow and post them of where it is plumed in I just have a soft cab but it was about 18 degrees here today and moving some hay and on low I was in a t shirt and jeans and sweating it was so hot on low. The fittings that go into the block are kinda spendy 24 bucks a piece from Napa but there stainless and should hold up well.

Mike, what heater are you using and what fitting did you have to buy? I'm considering doing the same with my 1845c- same cummins engine. thanks.
