So I am trying to help my Aunt out with this machine. Her husband passed away a few years back. The right side hydro motor seams like it does not go back or forward. Once and a while I can get it to grab and pull hard, (still have it chained to the trailer). But then a few seconds later there's nothing. Pulled the side chain case cover off. Everything in there looks great, all chains are tight. I also cracked both hydraulic lines loose on the top of the pump and it oozes out hydraulic fluid from each line. The hydraulic fluid looked a greenish color though. Also pulled the plug off of the top of the hydro motor and was able to get the fluid to oooz out of there also. I am leaning towards a bad hydro motor. What can I do to verify it is bad. Where and can I get a rebuilt one or do I need to have this one rebuilt? Any other pointers for trouble shooting this issue? How much Hydraulic Fluid does this machine hold? There is a lever next to the throttle and choke on the right side, what does it do (No its not the hydro stick). Also there is a lever next the the left hydro stick, don't know what it does either. Also how hard is it to pull that drive motor out if that is my issue? Any help from you guys would be great.

Since it pulls intermittently, you might want to check where the linkage connects to the shaft on the Vickers pump, that is a problem area. It might be worn enough to only let it catch once in a while for a few seconds, kind of like a worn out ratchet. The lever behind the throttle and choke is the two speed range selector, which always hangs up when you lower the cab, so watch for that. The lever ahead of the left drive stick is the parking brake. The beast holds 17 gallons of hydraulic fluid, not sure on your greenish tint, it could be coloring added to identify leaks although red is the usual color for hyd. fluid.

I'm with FlyerDan, sounds like linkage issues. If not, you can swop the drive motors to confirm one is bad. Also, while you've down in the chassis, grease the u-joints connecting the flywheel to the hydro pump. When those fail really bad things happen.

I was told if you plug the hydrostat and push on the stick it should lug down and almost kill the motor. So today I got 2 M12 plugs and plugged the right side or the front side of the hydrostatic pump. Started the machine and moved the stick back and forth, nothing there at all. So thinking the hydrostat needs to be rebuilt. Thinking I may try this on the known working side tomorrow and see if it does kill or lug down the machine. Also when I pulled the lines off of the known bad one the was hardly any hydraulic fluid in that side. Then after I started and ran the machine as soon as I removed the plug after running the machine you could hear it drain off the hydro fluid. I removed one of the left side hoses and that hydraulic fluid stayed and did not drain back at all. I am pretty mechanically sound, but have not done much on hydro type stuff. Are parts available for the Vickers Hydrostat at the dealer or even aftermarket? Do I pull out the complete pump and rebuild my self or drop it off to have someone else rebuild it. Or send it in to someone else to rebuild. Or do I just take the whole machine to the shop. What kind of estimated cost is there to rebuild it. I think it would still be cost effective to repair verses selling it cheap to upgrade. Please help guide me in the right direction.

If you are mechanical you can do most of the work yourself. I just repaired half of my hydro pump and it's not complicated. You'll need some large open end wrenches for the hoses. You might as well start by pulling motor which is real simple. This will give you better access to the hoses and pump mounts and makes it easier to put the pump in to align the drive coupling from the motor to the hydro. Put the pump in first then slide the motor in. A good source for Vickers parts is Dave at Metro Fluid Power at [email protected]. Phone 586-493-7990. You'll need to know the pump model. Mine were stamped into the hydro just behind where the hydraulic pump bolts to the hydro. It should be a TA and a number. You can probably buy a rebuilt pump from Loaderpartssource.com if you don't want to rebuild. Either way it's going to save you a bundle if you take it out. It is a lot of labor. Good luck.
