Working on getting everything working again. Now that I have my back glass replaced, time to fix the heat, later but not yet a priorty, the air. I cleaned out the rebuish that had accumulated in and around the fan blower. Was not as much in there as I expected since the guy I brought it from had let it sit for 5 years with no back glass, uncovered. Anyway, I worried that the motor could be froze up because of corrosion. So I took some long nosed visegrips and reached in and tried to turn the motor shaft. At first it would not move but after a few tries it would turn about 100% and stop. Turns easy with the wrench but not enough that an air hose blowing on it would make it spin. But it does jam at 3/4's a revolution. Not sure if this is typical or the motor locking up. It seems that if it spins any then it would be free. ?????? second thing, the AC/Heat fuse [f1 I think] was blown. I replaced it and tturned the fan switch on. Checked the fuse. It was blown. So I added another fuse. Turned the unit on and checked the fuse. It was still good. Only after I turn the motor switch to on does it blow the fuse. It sounds like the fan motor is locked up therefore blowing the fuse. But it does turn freely for 3/4's a revolution?????? I don't think that it is something lodged in the squirrel cage fins. If it were, it would give slightly with pressure. Cold out and I can't raise the cab in my garage where I have been working on it, so I can't try getting to the shaft from the under side. I'm trying to recall if it can be reached without pulling parts off. If I could just get a better grip on that fan axle, I'd force it loose. Any help greatly appreciated

The 100% in the first post should have been 100 degrees
Just tried forcing it although that is not much pressure from a cheap set of pliers only able to turn a 1/4 inch at a time through the filter grill. Anyway, I got it to move 180 degrees. I spun it with pliers at least 4 or 5 revolutions attempting to free it up better. Still blows fuses. Not surprised, the blower axle has to much resistance. What now, pull it out and clean or replace? Based on the manual, you have to discharge the cooling system in order to remove the fan motor????

Got the unit outside, raised the cab. Got the fan out without having to discharge anything. The hoses allowed me enough to turn it over and rest it on some blocks without kinking anything. The fan in my hand will turn, but is not what I call free. Will not spin. I'm thinking it should freespin????? But it takes a couple pounds of force to turn it. Most electric motors that I'm aware of free spin. I guess what I'm asking is should it freespin? Gonna have a good machine when I finish with it, but enjoying working on it.

I will try to find the wires needed to straight wire the motor off a battery to see if I can make it spin. The schematics drawings are so small that I can't see well enough.

Schematics show the black as ground and the remaining L,M or Hi. So I straight wired the blk to the ground battery terminal. Then each of the others one at a time to to the + terminal. Nothing happens except if I hold it for over 10 seconds, it starts to smoke at the motor. Sounds locked up to me. A new fan is what I need except that I can't remove the plastic squirrel cage because of corrosion. I hope they sell this also

Now you know why they put fuses in electrical circuits, it's because everything electric runs on smoke, and when you let it out of the box it doesn't work anymore. It might be too late, depending on how long you let it cook, but try taking it apart and cleaning the bearings and shaft ends. Most heater motors use sleeve bearings and they can crud up when allowed to set for long periods of time. A squirrel cage fan should spin easily, and continue for 3-4 revolutions after the initial spin at least. If it is toast, see if you can get some numbers off it and cross reference. Bobcat didn't build it, chances are they bought it from someone who supplies the auto industry and you should be able to find the same thing on amazon or ebay for a fraction of the dealer cost.

I have looked all over the web at these motors and squirrel cages. Prices there are reasonable. Gonna give the dealership a call tomorrow. The ones on the net for 3 speed were about $70 plus the cages and shipping. So if bobcat is under $120, then I'll get it from them. We will see.

The shafts are corroded to the point that if I try to take the cages off to open the motor, the bases on the cages will break.

Worst case, if you can get a motor cheap enough, can you get in there to cut the shafts off at the motor end then tap them through from the motor end if you support the rusty end? They may still break, but its all you can really do. I had this issue with a cooling fan on a 2hp electric motor, thankfully i managed to get it free without breaking it too much.

Bobcat dealership wanted $247 for blower unit. I ordered it from D&D auto for $59 for the motor and $ 16 for the squirrel cages. After shipping, it will be under $100. $150 dollar savings. My wife will be proud

Not a bad deal at all, even better when the heat and ac are working again :)

Those blower motors are junk and lock up pretty often. I think you figured it out but the fuses blowers becuase of the heavy draw from the motor not turning freely.

If you can cross reference parts you can save a ton. My alternator for my 743 was $260 from bobcat but I got my 10SI AC Delco alternator clocked at 3 o'clock for $26. I just had to tell them that I had a 1978 Chevy camaro with a 350 engine and no A/C and voila there it was. Its good to hear about other parts like yurs that we can cross reference.
