The light is coming on that says Hydraulic Filter Restriction on a John Deere 250 Skid Steer. It won't come out of part now. The other day I was using it and the boom suddenly wouldn't go up. I still had bucket tilt control and the machine would move forward, etc. My question: If I change the filter, would it make sense that it'd fix my problem? Not trying to ask an obvious question but while I wait for the filter to come in, I'm curious to know if I should be thinking of another problem. History: The boom wouldn't work (up/down or tilt) and the skid wouldn't come out of park. I replaced the monitor (unit with all the buttons) and also a solenoid that had a wire chewed through it by a rat. The wire caused a short and burned out my monitor. So, that was fixed and all was well. But, a few days later, I now have this problem. I am sure the hydraulic filter hasn't been changed for years (if ever; with 2,000 hours). So, my big question is: If the hydraulic filter was becoming plugged, would those be the symptoms to expect... have forward/reverse and tilt on bucket but not up/down. I kind of makes sense to me as tilting the bucket isn't that much load but raising the boom is... The other thing that is making me wonder is that I filled up the hydraulic fluid with Orscheln's Premium "303" Tractor hydraulic fluid (says recommended for JD: Hy-Gard use) as I replaced the monitor, etc... Put about a gallon of it in to top it off.

The problem could even be a seat or seat bar sensor. It locks you out of functions if it doesn't think you are in the seat.
Still change the filter, if it thinks its pluged, it should be changed. Even a chewed or worn wire could cause it to say it is clogged when it is not.

Deere seems to have trouble with hydraulic pressure sensors going bad also and that would have caused the problem..

Good price on the hydraulic fluid now at $31.99. Copied the specs:

Manufactured from base oils selected for their purity and thermal stability, this product contains a premium additive package to provide wear protection and anti-oxidant properties while being compatible with O-rings, seals and packing materials. Contains extreme pressure additives to protect gears and working parts of pumps and hydraulic equipment. Excellent water separation and anti-foaming characteristics. Blends safely with all OEM fluids. May be used where the following fluids are recommended: AGCO, MF, White: PF821, M-1127, M-1129, Permatran®, Q-1722. Allison: C-3. Case/IH®: IH-143, -145, MS-1204, MS-120-5, MS-1206, Hy-Tran®. Caterpillar: TO-2. Ford, New Holland: ESN-M2C, 134B, C. John Deere®: j20A, B(Hy-Gard®), J14B (303), J14C.

It seems that you should be well cover by this HO. HTH

So, after a few fixes it worked for a while. Now, the boom won't go up! The skid starts and moves (comes out of locked just fine) and the bucket will tilt.... But, the booms won't raise. Any thoughts on what to start checking? I am going to change the hydraulic oil filter because I have never done it. Also, the hydraulic oil restriction light is coming on in the display. I hate to ask an obvious question, but would a badle plugged filter cause the booms not to raise but the bucket to still tilt?

Safety interlock. If there is a sensor that thinks you are not in the seat it will lock that out for safety reasons. It could even be a bad lockout solenoid.
Generally they lock the wheels out too, but can just lock lift on some machines

I got into the area below and in front of the seat. Some seriously chewed up wires. Dang rats. I am on the hunt for the one that is causing it. Thanks for the advise. You were basically right.... something was not letting the current go through.

Sadly they sure can make a mess of things, hopefully it won't be too hard to repair.
