Hello to you all from Ontario Canada! Just registered but have been lurking for awhile now since I picked up this Ford Skid Steer. I'm looking to re-power my CL40 with a more popular engine. The little Ford V-4 was ran without the governor.....so you know where this is going. My question is, would a 30-35 hp Briggs, Subaru, etc have enough power in your opinion, to be a candidate for this machine? I have been researching this to death and I see where many other SkidSteers use these big v-twin engines for re-power but I'm concerned about the torque difference compared to the original Ford V-4. according to the web, the little V-4 produced around 80-Ftbls of torque in the mid 2000 rpm range.......that's quite a bit higher than the V-twins I researched. Do you think that this amount of torque is necessary? The drive pump is to run at 2800RPM if that helps. Thank you in advance for you opinions!

I'd think that it would work just fine. What was the HP rating of the V4? it would have been pretty close to that mark.
Just now much more torque does the V4 have over the V twin engines?

The Briggs Vanguard 35hp makes max torque of 53ftlbs @ 2200rpm The Briggs Vanguard 31hp makes max torque of 47ftlbs @ 2200rpm My concern would be how much torque would be lost as RPM's climb as the pump is to run at 2800rpm. The Wisconsin VH4D (30hp) which was used in the smaller Ford CL30 produced 56.2ftlbs of torque at 2800rpm. Right now, there is a Vanguard 31hp locally that has never had gas through it and I can pick it up for $1000.00. Here in Canada, that engine is over double that at off the shelve. Thing is, I'd hate to pull the trigger on it just to find out it won't cut it.

Sorry, forgot to mention that the original Ford V-4 was rated at 40hp @ 2800rpm

Hi Harv1,
Your original engine was rated at 40 hp. IMHO, I would not want to substitute with anything less.
But, with the original being a V4, chances are an inline engine would not package all that well in your engine compartment, so you may be stuck with the V-twin. Go with the 35 hp version if you can.
Are your pumps direct drive or belt drive? If they are belt drive, you could change the drive ratio and let your replacement motor rev a bit higher (say 3600 RPM), and attempt to extract all the HP from the engine that you can. I did a similar thing when I repowered my 440B, but in the opposite direction: since my replacement motor had 20% more power than the original, I sped my drive up a bit for more flow.
Where in Ontario are you? I live near London.
Cheers,
SR

I live 1/2 hour north of Huntsville. I was down your way a week ago in Norfolk........a gentlemen (used loosely!) had one of the V-4 engines that I had but said it was perfect. I call about 4-5 times telling him I didn't want to drive all the way down there and find out the thing is trash. He reassured me that I would be pleased. After driving almost 5hrs, I came home with out a motor! Governor was broken (the actual casing), had an exhaust valve leak to the point your could hear it through the exhaust.....granted it did run but it needed work. Just a note, this engine is on Kijiji as "Ford V-4 off sprayer". Even after I questioned him on my findings, he re listed the ad if there were no issues! Unbelievable! Anyway, my CL40 is direct drive but I think with a little creativity, that could be changed. I actually just got a call about a 2 cylinder diesel out of a heating unit....I'm guessing it would be a Yanmar. It's local and the price is right. But again, the rpm thing maybe an issue.....more reading I guess!

I would try to find something that developes the same torque near the rpm the riginal had.
Hp is torque related to time, so a engine with double the rpm will make hp with 1/2 the torque at the crank. But unless you can make a speed reducer you are going to loose 50% or that hp at the rpm you need to run at. Thats why high reving engines often have low torque high hp. And slow engines like diesel are the opposite.

I checked that add on Kijiji - pretty nervy, he sure makes it sound like things are all rosy!!
I did a bit of reseach on your engine; it sounds like it has a lot in common with the Ford Cologne V6 (2.8, 2.9, etc.). Actually, I saw a post somewhere about a guy who repowered a Ford CL-40(?) SSL with a 2.8 litre; it sounded like it was almost a direct fit.
Might be an option, definitely would not be a HP/torque issue.

SR

Ya, it makes me scratch my head the nerve some people have when it comes to selling used equipment. The V-4 was also a Cologne engine so the hook up is the same as the V-6. It's just the added length that has to be dealt with and the governor hook up. I was really hoping to find something a bit smaller so I could take advantage of the extra room the V-twin would give regards to maintenance but that my not be possible. I really appreciate the opinions and information you all have provided. I'm in no rush so hopefully some thing will fall in to my lap that will do the trick. BTW.....great forum guys!

You got to admit, a 6-cylinder skid steer would be pretty cool!!
But if you do go the v-twin route, you will likely need to hang a counter weight on the back of your machine to get your lifting capacity back.
I added 100 lbs to mine after the engine swap to make up for the lighter motor. It worked out so well, I added another 100 lbs for good measure!! (the extra 100 lbs is quick-removable for lighter attachments / better digging performance)

Oh ya! The V-6 thing is still on the table. If I can find a "good" 2.8L carb V-6 engine for a good price, I may do it. The newer 2.9L was fuel injected and I'm not sure if it as the hole for a distributor. Man, come to think of it, I could have a fuel injected V-6 skidsteer LOL!!! Joking.....it would be an electrical nightmare! BTW, what was your original engine and what did you choose to replace it with?

By comparison, mine was pretty simple:

The original motor was a 16 hp Kohler Magnum, I replaced it with a 20 hp Launtop LT620 from Princess Auto.
The Launtop is a copy of a Honda GX620; I go to Honda for spare parts for it; not that I have needed much. I'm nearly 3 years in and it has been awesome, way better motor than the Kohler ever was: more torque, starts easier, easy on fuel.
In hindsight, I wish that I would have known about this motor, although I don't thnk that it is yet available:

Maybe next time....

Nice job! How heavy is your Bobcat? I was surprised seeing the hydraulics on the tractor lifting it up!!

My machine is pretty light - weighs about 2200 lbs in the configuration shown. With an attachment and the counter wieght, it is closer to 2600lbs
The old 4610 will lift about 3500lb; it will raise the back wheels off the ground before the hydraulics relieve.

I have a Cl 40 with a ford industrial engine 40 hp I think - the governor is shot or needs rebuilt if possible - would like a new or rebuilt governor or if possible an electronic or digital. Any thoughts . thanks
