I recently purchased a 05 Case 410 with a engine issue. The engine would not run and was told it needed replaced. I thought I could rebuild it and after checking compression found that's whats needed. After dis-assembly the engine is going to need everything. After reading not too many good reviews on the Shibaura diesel engine, I may consider re-powering with another engine. I just have know idea what engine make or model to begin looking for. The N844L that was in the skid steer makes around 51 hp. Anyone have any suggestions or should I just overhaul the original Shibaura engine?

The Kubota V2203 is a very popular engine in this size range, many Bobcat models use it. We have one in our 773F and it has been awesome.
They were also used in a myriad of other industrial applicationsm like reefer trailers. Check Ebay.

They are a good engine, but you will need to work out if it will fit and ensure the rotation is correct (it should be, very rare for engines to run backwards but it does happen).
Some will more or less drop straight in. The V2203 is rated at about 44/46 hp, if you got the turbo one it would give over 50, but they are no where near as common so they would cost you more.

OK, thanks for the input. I definitely have my work cut out for me. I found several V2203 on Ebay stating 51hp. I don't know if thats accurate or not? I need to figure something out and make the plunge. I'm still pricing parts and total rebuild cost on the original Shibaura and then I will see how it compares. I know it will be cheaper to purchase a used Kubota and re-power but there are so many unknowns on cost that will come up doing a retrofit.
