I just realized there was a repower section, so this is also in the bobcat skid loader section. Skidroe has an excellent thread regarding repowering a Bobcat 440b with a Launtop lt 620. I would like to do the same. I have searched the internet and can't find a source to purchase Launtop engines. Does anyone know a source? Thanks, Kendall

Hi Kendall,
I bought my engine from Princess Auto here in Canada, basically the Canadian equivalent of Harbor Frieght. It was branded as their own in-house make, Power Fist, but it had a few decals on it that said Launtop. Princess Auto still lists them in their catalog, but I have yet to see another one in the store since Ibought mine (it was the last one they had and was a display model).
The engine is basically a copy of a Honda GX620. I got the idea from here:
http://www.smallenginewarehouse.com/RepowerItems.asp?Brand=Bobcat&Model=440B
At the time, they were offering 24 hp GX670's as a repower kit. As you can see, they have now moved on to B&S Vangaurd engines.
I learned a few things after doing the conversion:
1. I probably could have left the oil filter on the engine. While I was retrofitting in the aux hydraulics, I removed the lower black firewall plate behind the pump stack and found that I had clear access to the filter in it's stock location. It definitely is easier to get at were I have it mounted, but I don't thing that it is a necessity.
2. The engine that I have only has a 3 amp charging system, which is fine for charging the battery, but not enough for running lights.
3. I ended up putting in an electric fuel pump. The siphin system works once the motor is running, but I think that most of the starting issues that the machine was plagued with from new is due to a lack of fuel / loss of siphin.
Other than that, the conversion has been a great improvement over stock.
Cheers,
SR

SR, Thank you for the repower tips. I will check Princess Auto's and Harbor Freight's websites to see if they have an in-house Launtop model. Have a great day, Kendall

SR, I checked Princess Auto and Harbor Freight, both had several honda clones, but no 20 hp models. I e-mailed Launtop directly. They replied that no US distributer is currently importing the LT620. Sounds like you may have purchased one of the last ones available. Thanks, Kendall

Hey Kendall,
Yeah, I agree, they seem to have dryed up. Weird. Princess Auto doesn't even list it anymore.
That said, there are a multitude of engines out there that you could put in. Surplus Center has a 23hp Vanguard that looks like it would fit. Princess Auto has a 21hp Subaru that looks promising, too. You could even keep an eye out for a Honda GX620. I saw a couple on Ebay.
In my mind, it all boils down to how much you want to spend. From what I have seen, anyone of these options is likely cheaper than rebuilding your old engine, and will definitley yield a better result (more HP / torque than the original motor).
Out of curiosity, where are you located?
Cheers,
SR

Also, if you don't have a service manual for your machine, contact OldMachinist. I sent him one that I acquired last year. He should be able point you to an FTP site to download it.

Small Engine Warehouse has a pretty good selection and a repower section as well. Pricewise, they're compatible with Surplus Center, at least on the 23hp Vanguard, it was a whole penny cheaper on SC for the same model #. No Chicom knockoffs, I thought I saw a site that carried them once but I can't find it now.

Yeah, their prices are pretty good. Their part number 385447-0132 would be a good starting point. $1225 + $90 (muffler) + ~$100 (shipping, depending where you live), still under $1500.
For $1900, you could buy the whole kit and not even have to fire up the welder, but what fun is that?? : )
Just FYI:
I think I paid $699 for my engine, after doing some negotiating with the store manager. Thankfully, it came with a muffler. I had to buy a pulley, a belt, a fuel pump, and some hose / fittings. The fasteners and metal I used was stuff that was kicking around the shop. Cost me about $900 total tops.

Thank you for all the replies. I am trying to repower as cheap as possible. I did find a honda knock off on Carol Stream Motor Company, it goes for $925. I am also keeping an eye on ebay and craigslist to see what I can find. SkidRoe, thank you for the lead on a manual, I do not have one. Kendall

Hi Kendall,
Yup, that looks almost identical to the motor I used. Not a bad price either.
It looks like it already has a variable speed governor, so that is one less thing that you will have to mess with.
You will liklely need to ditch the heat shield on the muffler for added clearance.
Cheers,

Time will tell if the information is accurate or not, but I read that larger horse power Chinese engines will be imported again in June. If so, I would think the prices would drop a bit. Thanks, Kendall
