Does anyone know how to replace the drive belts without removing the engine? There is a hole in the firewall behind the seat, and the diameter of the hole seems to be the same diameter as the smallest sheave on the clutch-drive pulley assembly. I thought I could loosen the clutch and slide it forward through the hole far enough to remove it so I could slip the belts on. On further examination, that doesn't seem like it would work.

I'd like to help, but my 1818 is a different beast altogether. I work with small engines, I can't imagine they designed it so the engine has to come out just for a belt, however I could be wrong.

This is way late I know. Just registered to answer this. Yes, you need to loosen the motor enough to angle it a bit to remove belts. Just one of those fun things I have learned since getting my 1816C 3 weeks ago.

Since I first posted this, I've learned a little more. It may be possible to loosen the clutch set screw and move the clutch aft on the shaft. That may give enough play to slip the belt over. I have a very hard time starting those engine bolts. There is just not enough room to get my fingers under the angle iron and start the bolt. The next time the engine comes out, I'm going to cut a large hole in the plate between the seat and motor, and then I'd be able to just slip the belts on and off without having to loosen anything.

Can anyone tell me how to loosen the belt tension? I've got the engine loose and slid over already. But I can't figure out how to relieve the belt tension. Thanks
