i just bought a owatonna omc (mustang) 441 with a perkins diesel. i know very little about diesels the guy i bought it from knew even less than me. my question is what is the start sequence? where is the glow plug button? the only thing mine has is the key switch and the button to the left which cranks the motor. i think there may be wiring issues? the guy used a wire rigged up to jump the starter which spins the motor faster than the button in the cab, when the button actually engages the starter. and there is a fuel pump hanging by the ground wire with nothing attached to the other one. it just dont seem to fire. i know its something silly cause the guy had it started. is there a place i can find a repair manual to help me out?

Some key switches glow to the left then crank to the right.
Have you made sure there is no air is the system? Bleed the fuel to the injector pump.
Do you get any smopke when cranking?

yes i get white smoke when i crank it. since this is my first diesel i really am not sure how to bleed the fuel system yet. i did get it to start but its still not starting very easy. The guy i got it from bypassed the key and jumps the starter and used ether and after a few tries it reluctantly fires up. since the key switch went bad it hasnt been started much cause of a burst hyd line.

White smoke is un-burnt fuel. Your glow plugs probably are not working, it will cause very hard starting.
If you get a heavy gauge cable and run it from your glow plug rail and hold it to the +ve battery terminal for about 30 seconds, get someone in the cab to try cranking it. If the plugs are good, it should burst into life very quickly if not instantly. Its also possible the plugs are burnt out. If you remove them and use a test cable and put them on your battery, they should glow red right to the tip.
If the plufs were not working at all and you got it to start, your engine is probably in pretty good shape. I know i have a machine that flat out will not start without a glow.

there is a button to the left of the key switch that when pushed cranks the motor but much slower than jumping the starter selinoid alone does and i am wondering if thats supposed to be the glowplugs and they tried to tie the selinoid to that button? turning the key switch to the start position kills the power similar to my truck when i try to start it in gear(like neutral safety switch not happy) Is there a safety switch open not allowing it to start normal? now wondering if my drive problem may be related to my starting problems? i dont know if this loader has a switch for the disabled parking brake or not? really hoping its something simple but thats usually not my luck

I winder if the button is a combination start/glow?
I would install a momentary glow button to the glow solenoid. Press and hold for 20-30 seconds then start it. You can start an engine with the plugs still on, just don't run it too long like this.
Sounds like you need to fix the dodgy wiring a little...
As for the battery, One should be more than enough. My S250 has an 80hp engine, it just runs one N70 sized battery. I don't believe you need a second one if the one you have in there now is in good shape.

when i use the button it sometimes cranks sometimes not. when it cranks it spins over so slow the motor wont fire. i read someplace its gotta turn over at 300 rpm to start and pretty sure not getting that with the button. the battery looks new but worn down, needs a good charge.

I don't know the exact speed you need to get it to fire, but the faster the better. Give it a good charge or even jump from a good battery and see how it goes.
As you mention that it doesn't always work, its possible you have a bad switch or bad starter relay that doesn't make contact every time.

I have it at a bobcat dealer right now to troubleshoot the drive issues it has. and hope they can also figure out the starting issues but i told them not to worry so much about that more concearned about why it wont drive. im hoping the mechanic surprises me and figures it out. they told me they work on anything but dont know much about older mustangs and have no manuals for it.

I seem to be able to find a parts book and possibly a operators manual but does anyone know of a place to find a repair manual for my owatona / mustang 441

Hi Start is 1-3-4-2 There is no glow plugs bin this machine Fuel pump requires 12 volt to operate so you need to connect + 12 volts To start the machine pull the nob out under your right leg give a little throttle turn the key and push the start button. Hope this helps
