If changing the oil and filter on my LS160 doesn't fix the auto shut off with regards to the low hydrostatic charge warning, what next? The hydraulics and drive system all seem to be working fine. Dan

Showing my noobness here. Where do you drain the hydraulics? Dan
Most machines do not have a drain plug, you need to crack a line and let it drain out. You will not get all the oil out as its still in the lines, cylinders, motors and pumps. I drain mine from the aux hydraulic ports, run the machine at idle operate the hydraulics till you can hear it jitter and the oil is foamy, shut down, re-fill and then operate it to get the air out.
If you just open a line, you will get less air in the system, you will need to fiddle around to find one that allows you to remove most of the oil, not the easiest job sad to say.

Thanks Tazza. That sounds really........annoying. Geez! How hard would it have been for these guys to put a drain plug on the tank? I'll have at it tomorrow. Dan

The easiest is to pump it out the front couplers if you hasve a spare. Lift boom at pump until the air comes, shut engine off, lower boom and pump out the oil from the lift cylinder though the front couplers as well. Change filter.
If you want more then that out you have to start un doing lines
There is a hose on the front of the reservoir you can remove to drain it, but you need to lift the cab and boom to get to it.

Ok so that hasn't worked. New oil and filter and still shuts down with a low hydrostatic charge warning. Tazza said it may be just a faulty sensor. The only sensor I can find in New Holland parts schematic online is the pressure switch right by the filter mount. Is that the one or does that just tell me the filter is plugged? Dan

On Bobcats, the charge pressure sender is on the hydraulic filter housing, yours may be the same? They also have a plugged filter switch in the housing.

You need to attach a guage in the T in the line right after the hyd filter. (on the operators rh side of the oil cooler, where the 2 wire sender is) Remove the small plug that faces forward and install a 300 psi guage in that port. You should have 160 to 170 psi in that port at full engine speed. If the pressure drops below 50 psi the engine will shut down. Runninf without charge pressure can damage the hydros.
If the pressure is low you need to replace "charge check valve" just below the t in the line below where you installed the guage.
If the pressure is good, you can loop the 2 wires on the sender together and bypass the sender for the time being (believe that will work)
here is a link to further info.

I'm getting 160 at idle. So that means a bad sender? Dan

It sounds like a bad sender, at idle thats pretty good pressure.
Sounds like a bad sender. Does the shutdown occur alway say 15 seconds after start up. Or can you workit some then it dies?
My thinking is you may want to leave the guage in a while and operate it some to see if the pressure is stable.
Can you hook the wires together and bypass the sender? Will it run like that?

It shuts down within a minute or so of startup. I was watching the gauge when it shut down and it was idling at around 160psi when it shut down. I called the service dept and they said the senders go bad fairly regularly. $55.62 at the dealer tomorrow and we'll see if I am on the right track or not. I didn't hook the sender wires together but I did connect them with couple of alligator clips and it still shut down but it was an admittedly crappy connection. I'll see what happens tomorrow. Dan

Hi I have a 2000 LS 170 it's doing the same thing. I'm going to try cleaning the charge check valve first and change the filter. If that don't work I'll change the pressure sensor. I have a hard copy of the repair manual but don't have the parts manual. Is there away to down load the parts manual. It's really great to find someone who knows what they are talking about and willing to help. Thanks Bob

There is an online parts diagram at www.messicks.com You'll need to go to New Holland Construction for skid steers--or input your model. It's kind of finiky about how you type it so be patient.
They sell many other brands other than New Holland. I use them, who happen to be 500 miles away, rather than two local dealers.

Thanks Earthwerks I added Messicks to my favorites. Great website. When I work on anything the more pictures the better. Thanks again Pappy
