owensge - as skidboy pointed out in another thread there is a LOT of time spent when people ask questions in general repairs but fail to post what model machine they are talking about. Any thoughts about adding post guide lines or hints to speed up user questions? say something that pops up for hints when you go to start a new thread like give as much detail as possible including model no, hours and year if known.
It may be more trouble than its worth but it may be something to think about for a future upgrade.

If that could be done I think it would be appreciated by a lot of people. But I don't know how many hours it would take to implement. There is no harm in asking. Well done.

On other boards people often list their equipment in the signature line. I just tried putting something in and it didnt display. It often seems handy if people at least post their general location since climate and parts can vary widely across the world.

You should be able to add your machine info in the signature section. I can add some text in the "Add Thread" page with some hints.

Ditto on the signature, you see that on many forums, maybe a reminder to people to please fill it in

Good idea, just added mine in.
Not sure if this has been addressed completely or not as I am a fairly new member. I frequent a forum where system settings and info is 100% required for any help. They have a template somewhere in the site with all the questions they want to know, before they can help you. So basically the text/template sits there in a window you cant edit, you copy and paste into your new thread window and fill in your answers. At the end you state your question or problem. Obviously follow up questions will occur but it may get the ball rolling. One thing they do on this site i wont mention, they will not under any circumstance help if you dont fill out the minimum info, and they proceed to noogey you. Everyone here is much more friendly which is nice. Just a thought for the powers at be to kick around.

In some ways it would be good, but there are some users that don't know all the details. Like there have been people trying to work out just what model machine they have as the decals and ID plate were missing. I agree it would help, but if a user doesn't give enough details we do pester them to give more details. I *think* something close to this was brought up, like a text box when starting a new thread telling the member to provide as many details as possible. This hasn't been done as the owner needs time to update the software. There are a few plans for the upgrade, but time is the limiting factor.

If you can give me an idea of some basic questions for a template, I'll consider that for the new version.

Make, Model, Year, Series,
Owners location, heavy equip experience in years
Attachments
Related equip, ie trucks, trailers, tractors
This would help narrow down the model and also the experience of the owner so we can throw question and suggestion relative to their experience (hopefully)

I think thats a good basic start, series if known is good but not everyone knows what series they have. Even if its just a guide and not something they MUST complete before they can post, is that reasonable? we don't want to be too tough on members..... not yet anyway!
