Is there any recommendations for a skid steer backhoe? Pros or Cons? Make it yourself? I'm looking at something like this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/odu6pn6pxtefqfr/12305005_1.jpg?dl=0

This style has limitations, you need to skid your tyres every time you want to dump a load of dirt. To be honest, see if you can get a good deal on an actual excivator attachment.
With that said, they do work, but not as well as a real excivator attachment would.

OK I'll add this, as I pretty much have this exact backhoe attachment its a cheap model, knew this going in,( paid 750 bucks for it) the maker makes one's exacly looking like this,a dn there HARD to get parts off of, better models are out tghere but cost a LOT m,roe for them, so heads up on this side of cheap hoe here! I bought it actually to bury a few dead cats (parents used to care for stray cats and always seemed to have a few that would pass on at times from illness or old age and got tired of digging holes by hand LOL) so being cheap and all was fine for me! the one I got was made with a full set up, hydraulic lines plus covered protection hoses) and the attachment plate ready to work or so I thought! first thing I found out was the quick attachment plate they used, the angle iron steel was very small, and weak, would bend and allow skid steer quick attach lips to slip out from under the tabs on the plate , and hoe would then just fall off! which meant there was very little of your quick attach holding onto the plate and it would pull off under even a LITTLE load, and added a lot of stress to the tips of the quick attach! so that had to be corrected, easy cheap fix, but one I had to do to even use it! after that the cylinder was very sloppy and the pins holding it on would walk out , so had to add some shims/spacers to fill gap a little better so loss slop and better pics to hold things on! there basically called STIFF arm hoes too by the way! any how, from MY experience doing very MILD digging work with it, it adds a LOT of stress to your skid steer quick attach and tilt cylinders, I have a LX 865 I use it on and I wouldn;t want to do any major work with it, I think you will just beat your machine up and its not worth the damages over time if all you need to do is dig a few small holes in softer soils, it will get the job done, just make sure you have a GOOD HD plate attached to it, and lots of contact on your quick attach and the plate tabs, the more the better to share the stress applies there! the more serious back hoe attachments that have there own controls and all work MUCH better and do a LOT more, and well the costs show it personally if you need to dig a lot,. don't waste your time or money on one of these if you do very LIGHT duty work on rare occasions, they are nice to have I have used it for a few odd jobs since getting and GLAD I have it,, but I wouldn;t want to try and use on job sites when time and money matter! and or often, as again they will work your machine in ways it wasn't made to be used, adding stress to pins and parts that were NOT designed for this added stress, long term use would be hard on your skid steer IMO!

OH also forgot to add, this model in pic, if same as what I have and looks like it, is also SHORTER than any other one I have ever seen, as in the arm is shorter in length so better made one's seem to be both heavier duty and have longer reach, and they also tend to have options on different buckets where I have YET to see any other buckets available for this model and as a fact I TRIED to contact the maker on seeing if I could get a smaller bucket or a wider one, and they have not returned any calls or emails! so if you ever need a new one, GOOD luck, all I see are discount skid steer sales, selling WHOLE backhoe attachments, NO parts available I am told so its a buy AS IS< and on your own deal!

MRBB Thanks for such a detailed answer to my question. I agree that this is not a solution for a professional. My needs around the ranch are occasional and few. My soil has no rocks but can be hard if it hasn't rained in a while. I have a home made attachment for my tractor that mounts to the 3 point and "rips" a trench. This attachment does work but is not elegant by any means. I'll use your recommendations and see if I can find a longer arm model with bucket size options.
